It's a big year for tourism in Bulgaria. According to Novinite.com, tourism in the country was up 15 percent between January and June of this year.
Tourism Minister Nikolina Angelkova said that as many as 3.1 million tourists visited the country in the first half of 2016, making this the most successful year in Bulgarian tourism since 1998.
The focus for 2016 was to grow tourism by 10 percent, so the country is 5 percent above its mark. Countries sending more tourists Bulgaria's way are Germany, Poland, Romania, and Russia.
Domestic tourism is also on the rise in Bulgaria.
"There is also serious movement of Bulgarian tourists both in Bulgaria and abroad," said Ruman Draganov, chairperson of the Institute for Analyses and Assessment in Tourism on Radio FOCUS. "There is a serious increase of more than 20 percent in the trips made by Bulgarians abroad in the past month. We also report serious movement of the Bulgarian tourists within the country. We expect the number of trips of Bulgarians to be of about 5.6 million. Some Bulgarians go to the seaside or abroad several times."
