The U.S. can't seem to catch a break from snowy weather this winter. Winter Storm Neptune is the latest system moving through, disrupting Valentine's Day weekend travel. Those venturing out should be cautious and plan ahead.
States from the Atlantic coast all the way to Michigan will be affected by heavy snow accompanied by high winds, according to Weather.com. New England, still recovering from a series of storms that Weather.com calls "virtually unprecedented in modern times," will be hit again.
Parts of Michigan have already received 8 inches of snow, and winter storm plus blizzard warnings are in place across the region. Areas of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Long Island are under a blizzard warning, as is Boston, a city hit particularly hard by these latest snowstorms.
Other major cities in the crosshairs are Buffalo and Albany, N.Y., each with a winter storm warning. New York City and Philadelphia are under a winter weather advisory, and will have lighter snow totals than other areas, but the combination of strong winds and snow could create blizzard conditions.
As Saturday progresses, snow will fall all the way from the Midwest to the Northeast, heaviest in Michigan, which has lake-effect snowfall, coastal Maine, and Southeastern Mass. Going into Sunday, New England will experience heavy snow, tapering off by the evening. Snowfall totals may be more than a foot in these areas, and coastal Maine could get 20 inches. These are places that Weather.com notes already have 3-4 feet of snow on the ground. Winds, reaching a damaging 60-75 mph at times, will be an issue throughout the areas affected by the snowstorm.
Cancellations and delays are multiplying for Northeast air hubs, with conditions becoming so untenable that Weather.com offers the possibility that Logan Airport will close for a time on Sunday. Flightaware.com is showing almost 300 flight cancellations on Saturday, and over 1,100 delays. There are almost 600 cancellations on Sunday, mostly at Logan, Newark Liberty, JFK, Philadelphia International, and Reagan National. All of these numbers will rise.
Travelers should check their flight status regularly to see if anything changes as Neptune moves through.
