This summer's most binge-worthy series, "Stranger Things," has a stellar cast - including Winona Ryder, David Harbour and batch of precocious young newcomers - but the real star of the show is the beautiful Bellwood Quarry.
The former quarry and future park has become a mainstay in many of the movies and TV shows that have filmed in the Atlanta, GA area in recent years. The majestic, sometimes eerie, location became a perfect fit for the '80s-set sci-fi mystery/thriller about a group of young boys who go in search of their missing friend, along with his mother and the local police chief.
The quarry has been featured in "The Walking Dead," "The Vampire Diaries," "Game of Silence," The "Divergent" series, "The Hunger Games," the upcoming "Fast and the Furious" movie, "The Fundamentals of Caring," "Vacation" and many other projects, but none have utilized the space as much, or as effectively, as "Stranger Things." I won't divulge too much about its spoiler-filled place in the show, but those who have already seen "Stranger Things" will immediately recognize the quarry's role.
The quarry is no longer operational, but it will have a new use in its near future. The city plans to build the Westside Reservoir Park on the 300 acres of land around the quarry, with the quarry as the centerpiece of this new greenspace. This also means there will finally be legal access to the area, so fans will no longer have to trespass to get a glimpse at this famous filming location.
