Universal Orlando has selected Elon Musk's tunneling firm, The Boring Company, to construct a transportation system connecting the resort’s major properties, according to the Orlando Sentinel.
The Boring Company was selected over two other bidders, V2R and Sunshine Connection Partners, in a multi-month competition. The company is best known for developing the Vegas Loop, an underground transportation network in Las Vegas.
The project draws comparisons to Walt Disney World's innovative monorail system, but it remains to be seen how The Boring Company will proceed, especially considering Florida's shallow water table.
The district invited proposals from companies to design a transportation system to connect Universal's parks to other Universal assets, such as hotels.
The method of transportation has not been disclosed by the district, but considering The Boring Company’s track record in tunnel development, an underground system appears likely.
“Board members determined that The Boring Company’s proposal best addressed the District’s request for an innovative, future-ready, point-to-point solution,” the district said in a statement announcing the decision. “The District will now continue collaborating with local stakeholders while exploring the operational and financial feasibility of the preferred proposal.”
In 2023, The Boring Company proposed a $100 million project to tunnel from downtown Fort Lauderdale to the beach, but the plan fell through after both sides lost interest.
