Officials from Universal Studios confirmed plans to open the
company’s first theme park in the United Kingdom.
According to Sky News, Universal revealed that it had purchased
a large patch of land in Bedford, which is located about 15 minutes from
the center of town. The land parcel covers either side of Manor Road and
Kempston Hardwick station.
The Bedford location is within two hours of more than half
of the population in the UK, about 45 minutes from London and easily accessible
from Luton airport. Universal Studios already owns theme parks across the United
States and in Asia.
A Universal Studios spokesperson told Sky News that the
theme park company has “acquired land” and is “at the early stages of exploring
its feasibility for a potential park and resort at this site.”
“It will be many months before we are ready to make a
decision to proceed and we look forward to engaging with all relevant
stakeholders and the local community,” the Universal Studios spokesperson
continued.
Earlier this month, the Universal Orlando Resort announced
the addition of two
new hotel properties to its portfolio. Co-owned and operated by Loews
Hotels & Co, Universal Stella Nova Resort and Universal Terra Luna Resort
will each feature 750 guest rooms in Universal Orlando’s Prime Value category.
When the new properties open in 2025, the theme
park company will offer 10,500 total guest rooms across the destination.
Universal Stella Nova Resort and Universal Terra Luna Resort will be located
adjacent to the future site of the new Universal Epic Universe theme park,
which is also slated to open in 2025.
