If you're a fan of a great western you don't have to live vicariously through your TV screen to enjoy the Wild West. The heart of the United States' legendary territory is awakened by many attractions that provide an in-depth view of its iconic culture. From historic homes to colorful paintings, each of the following sites offers captivating views of the American West no movie can provide.

Prescott AZ: Whiskey Row

For the socialite

Straight out of a classic western movie, Whiskey Row was lined with rustic saloons that were commonly bombarded with rugged-looking cowboys taking shots to the head and wiping sweat from their brows while contemplating their next move over a game of cards. Fast-forward to 2014, and faint songs of country singers still resonate through the air if you listen closely while posted at the bar or dining in one of The Row's restaurants.

Over the years it has also evolved into a vibrant art center when visitors aren't simply basking in charm and admiring its everyday hustle and bustle. Whiskey Row is the epicenter for Arizona's social scene where good food, music, drinks and the spirit of the West are never far away

Colorado: American Museum of Western Art

For the art aficionado

The past comes to life at the American Museum of West Art, with masterpieces depicting American art and history through the eyes of the West. From paintings exemplifying Expressionism to modern Americanism, the museum provides an in-depth look into one of the nation's most influential societies.

It also takes the art lover back to the 19th century with the Anschutz Collection, which illustrates the era when Indians no longer dominated the western territory. Through imagery, bright colors and bold figures the American Museum of Western Art transforms into a majestic time machine - where cowboys, mountain men, hunters and inventers once called the West home.

New Mexico: Carlsbad Caverns

For the nature lover

There's no visit to the West without exploring its vast geological marvels, and one dramatic landscape that particular comes to mind is the Carlsbad Caverns. Staying true to its prehistoric formations, every inch of it is consumed by natural beauty presented in towering rock walls, cactus and shrubs.

But unbeknownst to the inexperienced discoverer, its beauty is more than skin deep; in fact, it lies way below the surface. That's because the Carlsbad Cavern is a treasure trove of stunning caves that provide a premier underground experience. If you think the Wild West is captivating on screen, you'll want to see the way its natural beauty unfolds before your eyes.

Arizona: Navajo National Monument- Keet Seel and Betatakin Cliff Dwellings

For the historian

To truly understand the western culture, visitors should see how its ancient people lived, and that's by visiting the Keet Seel or Betatakin Cliff Dwelling. The sites are impressive ancient homes of an ancestral tribe that built them out of mud, sandstone and wood. Etched onto cliffs in perfect views of the Tsegi Canyon system, an elevated hike is required to witness these ruins up close.

Guided tours are offered to see both attractions. It takes a three- to five-mile hike to reach Betatakin which starts at an elevation of over 7,000 feet. Keet Seel's location is more strenuous and travelers need to obtain a backcountry permit before attempting this 17-mile trek. Although exploring these ancient homes are no easy feat, their intricate designs and history make the climb worthwhile.

Seattle, WA: Pike Place Market

For the shopper/foodie

It's the "Soul of Seattle" and a place where shoppers are enticed by delicious fruits and charming souvenirs. Pike Place Market is one of the oldest markets in the nation and a vibrant spot for capturing the eccentric side of the city. Since it officially opened its arms to its first customers in 1907, the market has thrived as one of Seattle's most precious gems.

It may not be the rootinest tootinest place, but for the urban cowboy looking for a place to get your nosh on, quench your thirst or meet a new friend, the Pike Place Market is designed to fulfill all of your needs and much more.
