Adventure travel is growing in popularity and many more travelers are planning to take trips that incorporate activities that are a little more on the daring side.

Because of this, Claudio Saita, deputy CEO and executive director in Australia for Tokio Marine, underwriters for World2Cover travel insurance, has some tips for savvy adventurers on how to plan a successful - and daring - trip.

According to Saita, research shows the adventure travel market is worth around $259 billion a year worldwide.

"Those who traveled overseas were substantially more likely to have done something adventurous while they were away compared to those who holidayed domestically, and activities can be anything from 'hard' adventure such as trekking, bungee jumping or white water rafting, to "soft" adventure like birdwatching, camping or cycling," she said.

Here are a few of Saita's tips for planning your next adventure.

Do your homework. Accidents usually happen when you are not prepared, advises Saita.

"While planning your trip, research the month you intend to travel as the seasons can greatly effect conditions," she says.

As an example, Saita notes that climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is not a good idea during the rainy season, which is usually March - May.

"Once you're at your destination be sure to check out conditions before any adventure, such as when high and low tide are if in the water and how rough the waves look if you're jet skiing," she recommends.

Travel smart. Saita recommends registering with the government if you are traveling to a dangerous location.

In the U.S., that includes the State Department's STEP traveler enrollment, where registered travelers can receive notifications from the embassy if something goes wrong.

Equip yourself. "Whether you plan on skiing, snorkeling or mountain climbing, be sure you have correctly fitting gear from head to toe. Loose equipment will be uncomfortable at best and dangerous at worst. If in doubt, its best to seek a professional for advice and a fitting," says Saita.

Train. Being in shape will help you enjoy your trip more and help ensure you don't get injured on the road.

"If you are planning on activities that require physical exertion, such as hiking, biking or running, or you just have a lot planned for a jam-packed trip, it's a good idea to start a training routine. It doesn't have to be rigorous, but it will prevent potential injuries down the track once you throw yourself into your adventure," Saita recommends.

Check your insurance coverage. One of the most important aspects of an adventure trip is to make sure that you will be properly taken care of if something does go wrong.

"Make the time to read your insurance product disclosure statement to ensure you are fully protected for all your activities and the whole trip. Consider additional specialized coverage," says Saita.

While these are some general tips, make sure you also consider your own special needs when adventuring abroad in order to have a truly amazing experience.
