<p><em></p><p>UK passports are currently burgundy. They switched from burgundy to blue when the UK joined the EU. In a recent article, the <a href="http://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/775263/British-passport-burgundy" target="_blank">Examiner</a> wondered if the UK would switch back to blue as a result of Brexit and wrote about the various meanings behind the colors of passports. </p><p>"The shade of each national passport is derived from four main colors: red, green, blue or black, according to Hrant Boghossian, the vice president of Arton Group, which runs the interactive passport database Passport Index," notes the Examiner. </p><p>Most of the EU passports are burgundy and countries who want to join the EU have switched the color of the passports to burgundy, with a few exceptions such as Croatia. </p><p>Other countries have taken a bolder approach. </p><p>"The Swiss passport is bright red with a white cross on it, just like the country's flag," says the Examiner. </p><p>A few countries even have black books. </p><p><strong>[READMORE]READ MORE: <a href="http://www.travelpulse.com/news/travel-technology/forget-the-passport-australia-eyes-facial-recognition-technology.html" target="_blank">Forget The Passport; Australia Eyes Facial Recognition Technology</a> [/READMORE]</strong></p><p>"Only 10 countries have black passports, including New Zealand and Trinidad and Tobago," says the Examiner. </p><p>Will the UK be changing its passport? </p><p>Home Office minister Robert Goodwill tells the Examiner: "There are no immediate plans for changes to the format or color of the UK passport." </p><p>For more on the meanings behind passport colors, read on <a href="http://www.express.co.uk/travel/articles/775263/British-passport-burgundy" target="_blank">here</a>. </p>
