PHOTO: CHIC Punta Cana is one a new generation of adult-only, all-inclusive resorts. (All photos by Brian Major)

Let me start out by saying that I love children. I'm a parent myself with a kid of my own, albeit a grown-up version. Yet despite my paternal experience and instincts, I can't get enough of the latest generation of adults-only all-inclusive Caribbean resorts. CHIC Punta Cana, a 323-room property on the Dominican Republic's Uvero Alto Beach, is easily among the category's best.

The adults-only all-inclusive format isn't necessarily just about excluding children. Then again perhaps it is. During one weekend visit this summer, the very active property's clientele featured a diverse gathering of couples and guy- and girlfriend groups.

Millennials mingled with 50-something baby boomers and 30-something vacationers, all in search of sunshine and good times. Although some of these folks are surely parents, there wasn't a child in sight. Still, while the atmosphere was free of the youngest among us, it's definitely wasn't bereft of the young-at-heart.

That's because while its kid-free property creates a decidedly adult atmosphere, CHIC Punta Cana's upscale facilities and amenities also produce the perfect atmosphere for sophisticated, grown-up fun. Thus the adults-only policy is as much about creating a distinctive vacation environment as it is about excluding children, and this resort delivers in nearly every regard. Here are five things to like about the CHIC Punta Cana resort:

Excellent atmosphere: The resort's operators aim for a "social vacation" that engages its guests' tastes and preferences and they generally meet that goal. The property's contemporary architecture features a well-executed modern interpretation of classic Las Vegas resort design with clean lines, open vistas and utilization of natural materials in public areas and across the smartly manicured grounds.

Guests can spread out in a beachside cabana or under a thatched-roof shaded lounge chair while enjoying butler service. Swimmers can create amazing underwater images ready-made for social media in the resort's glass-walled, above-ground Mermaid Pool. Beachfront yoga classes are held each morning in an amphitheater-styled stage that overlooks the main pool.

Diamond Club guests also receive preferential reservations at a la carte restaurants plus access to an exclusive beach area with dedicated bar and waiter service. Personalized check-in and check-out services and complimentary early check-in and late check-out services are also provided to Diamond Club guests.

A big-time beach: The resort is positioned along a beautiful stretch of Uvero Alto beach that is one of the dozens that give this country its reputation as one of the Caribbean's premiere best sun-and-sand destinations. The beach offers beautiful blue waters, powdery white sand and an intimate character. Despite its secluded nature, the beach never feels crowded and guest easily spend hours partaking in an array of water sports or simply enjoying the stunning natural atmosphere.
