California startup company, Galactic Resource Utilization Space (GRU Space), has launched an online portal inviting adventure seekers to reserve a room at the first hotel to be built on the moon, according to a report by KTLA 5 News.

The application portal provides early access to a future lunar hotel projected to open in the early 2030s. The cost for the reservation? Up to $1 million. According to GRU Space, participants may be required to provide medical, financial and personal documentation to prove they are capable of safely making the journey and can afford the reservation.

Applicants must first pay a non-refundable $1,000 application fee. If selected, they can then choose to make a $250,000 to $1 million refundable deposit to reserve a spot at the future lunar hotel. Final pricing has not yet been set but according to GRU Space, a stay at the hotel will likely exceed $10 million.

The first version of the hotel will be manufactured on Earth, sent to the Moon and inflated into a pressurized habitat before later versions are expanded with structures built from lunar soil.

On the GRU Space website, the company says, “Only twelve humans have ever walked on the Moon, and by taking part at this early stage, you join us as we lay the foundations for life beyond Earth.”

According to Space.com, GRU Space was founded by 22-year-old electrical engineering and computer science graduate from UC Berkeley, Skyler Chan.

Chan said in a statement, “We live during an inflection point where we can actually become interplanetary before we die. If we succeed, billions of human lives will be born on the moon and Mars.”

The GRU Space projected timeline for the project includes:

  • 2026: Applications reviewed
  • 2027: Private auction for specific mission roles and lunar stays
  • 2029: First construction payload lands on the moon
  • 2031: Lunar habitat and construction systems deployed
  • Early 2030s: First guests arrive
