Meliá Hotels & Resorts has made its long-awaited entrance into one of the world's most sought-after travel destinations with the opening of Meliá Whale Lagoon Maldives in January 2026.
The five-star, all-inclusive resort marks a significant milestone in Meliá Hotels International's global expansion and brings the brand's signature hospitality to the breathtaking shores of the South Ari Atoll.
Getting to the resort is an experience in itself. Guests fly into Malé International Airport before boarding a scenic 30-minute seaplane transfer that delivers them directly to the property, a fitting introduction to what awaits.
The resort sits at the edge of the South Ari Marine Protected Area (SAMPA), a celebrated marine sanctuary known for year-round sightings of whale sharks and manta rays. Snorkelling, diving, paddleboarding and kayaking are among the activities on offer for those eager to explore the underwater world on their doorstep.
The property is made up of 100 private oceanfront villas, each designed to foster a deep sense of privacy and connection with nature.
Water Villas perch above the turquoise lagoon, offering uninterrupted horizon views from the moment guests wake.
Sunset Suite Villas with private pools cater to those desiring a more exclusive retreat, complete with generous living spaces and sweeping sunset vistas.
Beach Villas, positioned directly on the shoreline, offer immediate access to the island's iconic white sand.
Dining at Meliá Whale Lagoon spans four restaurants and bars, with a menu philosophy that blends Mediterranean and international cuisine.
Two infinity pools, a full-service spa offering wellness rituals, body treatments, a sauna and steam bath round out the resort's leisure facilities.
An entertainment program ensures guests of all ages are catered to, with live music, open-air cinema, cooking classes and dedicated activities for younger visitors, keeping the calendar full throughout any stay.
Chairman and CEO Gabriel Escarrer described the opening as a reflection of the group's core ambitions.
“The Maldives represent the essence of our purpose: to grow in the world’s most exclusive destinations and create unique moments in incomparable settings, delivered with the hospitality that defines Meliá,” said Escarrer.
With this debut, Meliá Hotels & Resorts cements its presence in the upper echelons of luxury resort travel and sets a compelling new standard for what an Indian Ocean escape can look like.
