Amazon says its systems are mostly back online as of Monday afternoon following a widespread outage of cloud services at Amazon Web Services (AWS), a disruption that brought down thousands of websites and online platforms, including within the travel industry.

The return of service was reported late Monday afternoon by CNN in an article that predicted the global outage could end up costing hundreds of billions of dollars.

Widespread internet outages related to an issue with the Amazon cloud computing company impacted travel early on Monday morning, with major airlines reporting issues with check-in and reservation functions.

According to ABCNews.com, the websites of several major airlines in the United States, including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, were impacted by the hours-long disruption of Amazon Web Services (AWS).

While neither carrier commented about the outage, customers reported that they were unable to access flight check-in functions or their reservations on Monday morning.

On X, a United representative said the airline was “experiencing a system glitch affecting our online tools.”

The United representative also said, “While we don’t have a confirmed timeline yet, we recommend checking back periodically for updates,” according to CNBC.

Flight delays related to the outage were minimal, according to FlightAware.com.

After several hours of issues, Amazon issued a statement on the outages, saying, “We are seeing significant signs of recovery. Most requests should now be succeeding. We continue to work through a backlog of queued requests. We will continue to provide additional information.”
