New data showed that while gas prices showed a slight
increase month-over-month for June, overall prices in the United States are
down considerably from 2022.
According to AAA Travel, the national average price for a
gallon of gas increased by two cents since last week and five cents since last
month to $3.58, but is down by $1.43 from a year ago as demand decreased
slightly.
Lower gas demand amid increasing supply has helped to limit
pump price increases, but if demand remains depressed, AAA spokesperson Andrew
Gross said pump prices would likely fluctuate moderately through next week.
“We may be in a bit of a demand lull heading into the July
Fourth holiday,” Gross said. “Drivers are benefitting financially, with 20
gallons of gas costing nearly $30 less than last year.”
“And with the cost for oil low, drivers will find pump
prices that are flat or drifting slightly lower for now,” Gross continued.
AAA data found the 10 states that have seen the largest
change in average price include Oregon (+16 cents), Florida (+14), Arizona (−14),
Illinois (+12), Washington (+11), Colorado (+8), Kentucky (+7), Alaska (+7), Wisconsin
(+6) and Alabama (+5).
As travelers prepare for the busy summer season, the most
expensive markets in the U.S. are California ($4.88), Washington ($4.85),
Hawaii ($4.73), Oregon ($4.49), Nevada ($4.27), Arizona ($4.21), Utah ($4.09),
Illinois ($4.04), Alaska ($4.04) and Idaho ($3.97).
