Nuremberg Airport in Germany temporarily suspended flight
operations on October 13 after a passenger plane from Greece triggered a
security alert, prompting fighter jets to escort the aircraft to the airport.
According to AirLive.net, the Corendon Airlines Boeing 737-800 was en
route from the Greek island of Corfu to Nuremberg when the aircraft transmitted
an emergency code associated with a possible hijacking, prompting German
authorities to scramble two Eurofighter jets to accompany the plane.
Once the plane landed safely at the German airport, local
authorities confirmed there was no danger. Six flights were delayed, and two
inbound flights were diverted as a precaution, the Associated Press reported.
An official from Corendon Airlines said a malfunction in the
aircraft’s radio communication system caused the emergency code. The airline
said there was no emergency and that the passengers, crew, and aircraft were
never in danger, according to Reuters.
Police cordoned off the airport while authorities
investigated the alert, and officials conducted checks before issuing an
all-clear. Airport operations subsequently resumed, and normal flight activity
continued.
Earlier in the day, three pilots reportedly spotted an
unidentified object suspected to be a drone near the airport, forcing the
airport to launch a search involving police and other security resources.
