Hurricane Rachel Prompts Beach Closures, Travel Precautions in Los Cabos

Hurricane Rachel is impacting Los Cabos, bringing heavy rain and dangerous ocean conditions to the popular Mexican resort destination.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Rachel was a Category 1 hurricane Saturday morning, with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph. The storm was located roughly 270 miles south-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California and moving west-northwest. No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

Despite the storm remaining offshore, Los Cabos officials have implemented precautionary measures as heavy rainfall and hazardous surf affect the region.

Beaches throughout the municipality remain closed under black-flag conditions, according to the Los Cabos government. Officials said some areas could receive between 70 and 75 millimeters of rain, and four temporary shelters have been activated as a precaution.

Emergency personnel have also responded to incidents involving people trapped in arroyo channels as rainfall moves through the area.

Travelers currently in Los Cabos should follow guidance from local authorities and their hotels and avoid beaches and flooded roadways. Those scheduled to travel to the destination should monitor airline notifications and weather conditions as Rachel continues moving offshore.
