Authorities have begun an investigation following a series of troubling incidents that threatened multiple flights taking off out of New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport.
The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that pilots of four separate commercial flights reported being targeted by green lasers in the skies above New York on Thursday night, according to ABC News.
The FAA reported that the four flights departing from JFK Airport - American 185, Shuttle America 4213, Delta 2292 and Delta 2634 - were flying over Long Island at an altitude of 8,000 feet and climbing when they noticed the lasers shining through the cockpit windows.
All four incidents were reported between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET Thursday.
The pilots reported seeing the lasers come from Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York, but a police response failed to yield any evidence or suspects.
Flashing a laser into an airplane cockpit is a federal crime that carries the threat of severe punishment. An individual who is found guilty could face a maximum of five years in federal prison in addition to a $250,000 fine.
Fortunately, all four flights reached their destinations without issue and no injuries were reported as a result.
