A new island has formed off the coast of North Carolina just in time for the summer season.
According to The Virginian-Pilot, visitors to the Outer Banks have dubbed the newly formed one-mile stretch of sand near Hatteras' Cape Point "Shelly Island" for its impressive collection of seashells.
The island is believed to be the result of the same shifting currents and storms that are constantly altering Cape Point's shoreline.
The massive sandbar is already a hit with anglers, photographers and other curious beachgoers.

Cape Hatteras National Seashore Superintendent Dave Hallac points out that reaching the island involves a bit of risk though, starting with the 50 yards of strong current passing between the point and the new island.
According to The News & Observer, four people have already died in rip current related incidents this month.
Sharks and stingrays have also been spotted in the area while old fishhooks could also pose a danger to anyone attempting to walk to the island.
"We're worried about shark bites, but we're more worried about drownings," North Carolina Beach Buggy Association president Bill Smith told The Virginian-Pilot.

It remains to be seen how long Shelly Island will stick around for or if it will expand and eventually connect with the point, but at least for now travelers heading to the Outer Banks this summer have a new attraction to add to their itinerary.
