Severe Weather Snags Southeastern Travel

After storms ravaged the Southeast to start the week, a tornado watch is now in effect from the northern Gulf Coast to western Georgia, especially causing travel headaches for those at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

According to the official website of the Federal Aviation Administration, a ground stop has been issued at the Atlanta Airport for all inbound and outbound flights due to the severe weather in the area.

Weather.com is reporting hail has been seen falling throughout the region while strong winds have uprooted trees and knocked down power lines. The FAA has said the ground stop is expected to expire early Wednesday afternoon, but could be extended if the weather does not improve.

The storm system is forecasted to begin heading northeast Wednesday night into Thursday, with states in the mid-Atlantic dealing with heavy rain, thunderstorms and even tornado warnings as well.

The flight delays in Atlanta, which is the headquarters of Delta Air Lines, are having a ripple effect on other regional airports as well. Tallahassee International Airport in Florida is also reporting several delays on journeys to Atlanta's main airport, according to WCTV.com.

The FAA is also reporting sporadic delays at Charlotte Douglas International Airport due to the adverse weather conditions and issues at other airports in the Southeast. As the storm continues moving up the East Coast, other facilities such as Raleigh-Durham International Airport could be impacted as well.

In a separate weather-related situation, a low ceiling in New York is causing slight delays at LaGuardia Airport, according to the FAA.
