Six Flags has temporarily closed nine roller coasters across
six amusement parks following a deadly incident at Six Flags Over Georgia that
left one person dead and several others injured on October 12.
According to The New York Times, the incident occurred shortly before 4
p.m. local time at the park in Austell, Georgia, northwest of Atlanta.
Authorities have not confirmed which ride was involved, although video from
local television stations showed passengers being evacuated from the Goliath
roller coaster.
A statement from Six Flags indicated that the theme park
operator has shut down similar attractions across its properties “out of an
abundance of caution” while authorities investigate the circumstances
surrounding the incident. The company said park employees and local officials
responded immediately and that it is cooperating with the investigation.
The Cobb County Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit is
investigating the death, according to CNN. Officials have not disclosed how the person died or
provided additional details about the other injuries.
Goliath, which opened in 2006, reaches heights of 200 feet
and speeds of up to 70 miles per hour. Witnesses told CNN that a man fell from
the coaster during the incident, although authorities have not publicly
confirmed any details.
The closures come less than two weeks after Six Flags Magic
Mountain in California announced the permanent retirement of its X2 roller coaster following scrutiny over reported serious
injuries associated with the attraction. Six Flags has not announced when the
temporarily closed rides will reopen.
