The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that
flights into New York City and Philadelphia would be limited on Monday due to
severe weather and air traffic staffing shortages.
According to Reuters.com, FAA officials said that travelers scheduled to
fly through John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International
airports in the New York City area, as well as Philadelphia International
Airport, could face delays and cancellations.
In addition to the thunderstorms and rain impacting the
northeast, the New York Air Route Traffic Control Center is reporting staffing
issues that are impacting flight schedules. The FAA revealed that ground delays
were averaging between 71 minutes and 149 minutes.
According to FlightAware.com,
as of 9:45 a.m. ET, 1,340 flights within, into, or out of the United States
have been canceled, and another 1,1788 have been delayed. The service
limitations are impacting top U.S. airlines and their regional partners flying
smaller routes.
In addition to the New York and Philadelphia airports, a
higher number of delays and cancellations are being reported in Boston, Chicago
and Washington, D.C. due to bad weather in those regions as well.
Despite calls from Congress and the White House to update and upgrade an aging
air traffic control system, the combination of bad weather
and peak travel season congestion has exposed the faults of America’s aviation
network.
