Travelers without a REAL ID might have to pay a $45 fee beginning today, February 1, 2026.

Here’s what you need to know. If you don’t have a REAL ID yet, which is an updated version of a typical driver’s license or ID card, you’ll have the option to enroll in TSA ConfirmID to establish your identity when going through TSA security checkpoints at airports. That includes paying a $45 fee which is valid for a 10-day travel period.

Travelers can, of course, opt out of the program. Other acceptable forms of identification include a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License of Enhanced ID, a U.S. passport or passport card, a DHS trusted travelers card (like Global Entry), a U.S. Department of Defense ID, a permanent resident card, border crossing card, Enhanced Tribal Cards, a foreign government-issued passport and more.

Those without an acceptable ID will be referred to the TSA ConfirmID for identity verification at checkpoints.

The TSA memo about the new program said “This process will differ airport to airport, and TSA is working with private industry to proactively offer online payment options prior to arrival at the airport.”

Over 94 percent of travelers already have their REAL ID or another form of proper identification, so this is likely to impact a minority of travelers.

“Beginning February 1, travelers who do not present an acceptable form of ID at our security checkpoints and still want to fly can pay a $45 fee and undergo the TSA ConfirmID process,” said Senior Official Performing the Duties of Deputy Administration for TSA Adam Stahl. “This fee ensures the cost to cover verification of an insufficient ID will come from the traveler, not the taxpayer. The security of the traveling public is our top priority, so we urge all travelers to get a REAL ID or other acceptable form of ID as soon as possible to avoid delays and potentially miss flights.”
