New York City has so much to see and do that is fun and exciting, but no visit to the city is complete without a heartfelt, solemn trip to experience the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.
For those who prefer to tour the memorial with a guide, New York City Vacation Packages (NYCVP) offers the 9/11 Memorial & Museum Night Tour, which also provides visitors with a unique perspective of the memorial and how the events of Sept. 11, 2001, has shaped the city and its residents.
The tour begins in Midtown Manhattan before making its way to Lower Manhattan on the NYC subway. (Be advised that the NYC subway is not wheelchair accessible for this tour.)
First on the itinerary is the Irish Famine Memorial, which with its realistic quarter-acre replication of an Irish hillside offers a stunning view of the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and the new "Freedom Tower" - One World Observatory. From there, visitors will have a walk through the new Calatrava "Oculus" inside the Transportation Hub. Next on the itinerary is a visit to Brookfield Place (once known as the Winter Garden), which offers an inspiring view of the One World Observatory and the New York Harbor.
Visitors will then have the opportunity to explore the 11 Tears Memorial, which is a tribute to those 11 American Express employees who were not able to escape the Towers. As night falls, visitors will take an evening walk around the rebuilt grounds of the 9/11 Memorial, a tribute to the nearly 3,000 people whose lives were lost that day, and in the World Trade Center bombing in February 1993. Standing in the footprints of where the twin towers once stood, a guide will explain the historical significance of the World Trade Center and the details of the morning of the Sept. 11 attack.
The tour concludes with a moving tribute at the Fireman's Memorial before being escorted back to Midtown Manhattan, but not before a visit to the National September 11 Memorial Museum. (Be advised that the museum recommends that the historical exhibitions may not be appropriate for children under 10, and that adults should exercise discretion before entering with children.)
The museum features a three-part historical exhibition that explores Before 9/11, After 9/11, and the Day of 9/11. In addition to the memorial exhibition, visitors will be able to explore Foundation Hall, a massive room that houses the slurry wall and last standing column, the latter of which is covered with mementos, memorial inscriptions and posters of the missing placed there by rescue workers and others.

The tour runs each Tuesday beginning in May through December excluding the weeks of the Fourth of July, September 11, Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tours depart at 4 p.m. from 51st and Broadway, rain or shine, and involve approximately two miles of easy walking throughout the city. Cost is $69 for adults and $59 for children.
