Elon Musk took to Twitter Thursday confirming that his Boring Company has reached a verbal agreement with government officials to construct a Hyperloop connecting Washington, D.C. and New York City.

Musk said the underground system would allow people to travel from D.C. to New York in under 30 minutes. The current drive takes about four hours to complete, while a train ride is just under three and a half hours.

The planned Hyperloop would also connect with Baltimore and Philadelphia. If completed, the Hyperloop would feature a dozen or more entry/exit elevators at each stop.

The cost of getting from the nation's capital to the Big Apple in the time it takes to stream a single episode of your favorite Netflix series remains to be seen. There's also no timetable for when the project could be completed.

While the agreement represents a significant step in bringing Musk's ambitious concept to fruition, it falls short of a signed contract.

Speaking earlier this week at a conference in D.C., Musk made it clear that expectations for the Hyperloop system are low.

"We're digging a tunnel, I don't know if you heard about that," he said via Inverse.com. "It's kind of a low-stress activity because everyone expects it to fail. The groan-worthy joke that I make about tunnels is they have low expectations-there's nowhere to go but down."

According to Musk, the new East Coast route will start alongside the company's original tunnel project in Los Angeles.

A recent survey from Allianz Global Assistance found that 64 percent of people believe Hyperloop high-speed rail will be a safe travel method in the future.
