Prague will always be on of my favorite travel destinations. Not only was it my first solo international trip, but the two months I spent exploring the magical city were also very much what cemented my passion for travel.
Prague has become a much more popular destination since my first visit many years ago, but it's still a fascinating city with a rich history that far too few travelers know about. If you're looking for an affordable-yet utterly romantic and beautiful-European vacation spot, then you can't go wrong with Prague, Czech Republic. With the largest ancient castle in the world, an iconic 15th-century Astronomical Clock, mouthwatering craft beer and a laid-back vibe, you'll have no shortage of things to see and do while you're there. Plus, the Czech countryside and parts of Germany remain within an easy day trip.
Here's our top list of things to see, do and eat on any short trip to Prague:
Cycle
One of our favorite ways to explore any destination is via bicycle. Prague is no exception, and the relatively small size of the city makes it easy to hit the top attractions via two wheels. Praha Bike is an excellent choice whether you want to rent a bicycle for a self-guided tour or partake in a guided trip around Old and New Prague. For avid cyclists, there are also multiple day trips that take you biking through the Czech countryside.
Prague Castle
Prague's most iconic attraction, no visit to the city is complete without stopping by the Prague Castle. It's the largest ancient castle in the world (roughly the size of seven football stadiums.) Don't miss it at twilight when the lights start to come on.
Charles Bridge
Walk across the Charles Bridge for some of the most spectacular views of the Vltava River. It gets crowded here, so we recommend stopping by as early in the morning as possible. The bridge dates back to 1357, but it's many arches and Baroque statues are just as mesmerizing today as ever. Later in the day, you'll find the bridge lined with street performers and vendors selling travel kitsch.
Wander Old Town
Prague's Old Town is, as the name suggests, the oldest part of the city. We love the cobbled streets, Baroque buildings, world-class museums and fun markets and restaurants. Don't miss the National Monument, a tribute marking Czech statehood, as well as the Medieval Astronomical Clock.
Eat and Drink
The Czech Republic might not be considered a renowned culinary destination, but there are certainly heaps of great dishes to try. Traditional meals tend to be heavy, but more and more restaurants are now serving lighter interpretations of classic dishes. Don't miss Kampa Park and Restaurant Zofin Garden, two favorite restaurants with travelers and locals alike. Look for deep fried cheese served with French fries (Smazeny Syr) and Czech pancakes (Palacinky). The established U Medvidku Beer Hall and Restaurant is also a fantastic option for sampling world-renowned Czech beer and small bites like bread dumplings.
For nightlife, Zizkov is the obvious choice. Pick between some 300 bars that dot the small area. It's not fancy, but you're bound to meet interesting people while enjoying great drinks.
This guide will get you started on your Prague itinerary, but it's certainly not all encompassing. What else would you add to the list?
