Foods You Might Eat During a Trip to Madeira

In addition to taking in the beautiful surrounding scenery and immersing yourself in adventures, a visit to Madeira Island is sure to include indulging in tasty meals along the way. The gastronomy does not go unnoticed by travelers, and one reason is that the ingredients used are almost always fresh.

There is a range of food items visitors might find on the menus, but here are a few of the typical Madeiran food dishes.

Soup lovers will be thrilled to try the famous tomato and onion soup. The comforting mix of flavors and ingredients includes garlic, onion, tomato, oregano and olive oil. Visitors will also find a poached egg in the middle of the dish.

Tuna steak is another favorite. The tuna is seasoned with salt and marinated in a sauce called molho de vilão. It's often served in local restaurants with fried maize as a side dish.

Espetada, or beef on a skewer, is also a popular dish visitors might eat during their vacation in Madeira. This is usually served with bolo do caco, or bread made with sweet potatoes, flour, baking powder, salt and water. The bread is served hot and with garlic butter.

In addition to indulging in delicious cuisine, travelers to Madeira are also encouraged to sample local wine where it's produced. Pairing wine with these dishes will only enhance the overall experience.
