Oahu's North Shore holds world competitions during the winter months due to the large waves that come through. For beginners, though, visiting this area during the spring and summer months is ideal since the waves are a lot smaller and better for a first surf. Seaside shacks line the coast where you can rent a board and gain a few tips from the locals.
Recently named Best Beach in in America, Poipu Beach in Kauai is a perfect spot to learn how to surf for the first time. The gentle waves linger all year long, and the surf schools in the area have lessons for all ages.
