2020's Top US and International Spring Break Travel Destinations

Warm Weather, Sunshine and Good Times

1/21
Allianz Global Assistance has released its annual Top 10 Spring Break Destinations survey, which reveals that more Americans will getaway this season compared to last. In fact, domestic trips are up 24 percent while international travel has risen 18 percent compared to 2019. To determine where travelers are headed, Allianz analyzed more than 2.7 million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length during the busy spring break season, defined as February 21 to April 19. Here's how the top domestic and international spring destinations rank in 2020.

10. Tampa, Florida

2/21
The Sunshine State is well-represented once again this year, claiming five of the top 10 domestic cities for American travelers this upcoming spring break, including Tampa, which accounts for 2.7 percent of flight bookings based on Allianz's recent analysis.

9. Salt Lake City, Utah

3/21
Like Tampa, Salt Lake City remains unchanged from last year, checking in at ninth domestically while accounting for 2.8 percent of flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length over the next two months. Interestingly, the average high temperature in March in Salt Lake City is just 55 degrees.

8. Miami, Florida

4/21
Sizzling Miami continues to be one of the most coveted spring break getaways among U.S. travelers but it still trails three other Florida cities in terms of popularity. In addition to sunny South Beach, visitors to South Florida will want to explore Miami's vibrant downtown this spring.

7. Fort Myers, Florida

5/21
Another warm-weather city providing visitors with access to beautiful beaches, wildlife and historic attractions, Fort Myers remains slightly more popular than Miami and Tampa for Americans heading to Florida this spring. Nonetheless, it's a long way from catching the number one spring break city in the U.S.

6. Fort Lauderdale, Florida

6/21
Elsewhere in South Florida, Fort Lauderdale offers travelers a slightly more affordable spring break vacation compared to Miami and saw no change in 2020, ranking sixth domestically and second in Florida. Americans who are tired of the cold and want to be close to the action can't go wrong in The Venice of America.

5. New York, New York

7/21
If there has to be a loser in the domestic top 10 this year, it's New York City, which falls one spot to fifth in 2020. Accounting for 3.7 percent of the flight itineraries Allianz examined, the Big Apple is technically tied with Fort Lauderdale. The good news is that the temperatures are just beginning to heat up come spring and there's no shortage of exciting things to see and do.

4. Los Angeles, California

8/21
The City of Angels jumped up one spot from last year, making up nearly 4 percent of spring break bookings in 2020. Los Angeles is popular for many reasons, of course, including its gorgeous weather, foodie hotspots and iconic sites.

3. Las Vegas, Nevada

9/21
The Entertainment Capital of the World has a ton to offer spring break travelers outside of gambling and sunshine, including winning sports teams, renowned performers, awesome pools and one-of-a-kind restaurants from some of the world's most famous celebrity chefs.

2. Phoenix, Arizona

10/21
At 5.3 percent, second place Phoenix sees no change in 2020 as this popular warm-weather getaway continues to appeal to Americans seeking an escape from the final days of winter. The Arizona capital is also convenient to Scottsdale, a desert resort town renowned for its golf courses and spas.

1. Orlando, Florida

11/21
It should come as little to no surprise that the Theme Park Capital of the World, Orlando remains the number one domestic city for Americans traveling for spring break, accounting for 7.8 percent of domestic bookings. Families have no shortage of world-class attractions to choose from, including the ever-improving Walt Disney World Resort.

10. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

12/21
Still recovering from a wave of negative news coverage last year, Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic have proven resilient to remain in the top 10 for 2020. However, the Caribbean resort destination is down three spots from where it was in 2019.

9. Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands

13/21
Elsewhere in the Caribbean, Grand Cayman has climbed up one spot from last year to ninth after the Cayman Islands reported record-breaking visitation in 2019. This gem of an island and the largest of the British Overseas Territory is home to one of the world's top shorelines in Seven Mile Beach.

8. London, UK

14/21
London is back on the international top 10 list for the first time since 2018, ranking eighth among the most sought-after international locales with 3.8 percent of bookings. Despite its rankings, the U.K. capital makes a strong case for being the world's best destination.

7. Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

15/21
Providenciales is one of the year's biggest risers, jumping up two spots from last year to seventh in 2020. However, at 3.9 percent it still has ways to go to catch up with this year's top-ranked international hotspot. If you weren't aware already, the magnificent Turks and Caicos islands are a sun and sea chaser's paradise.

6. Aruba

16/21
Aruba saw no change from last year and while it's definitely a hit this time of year, this romantic island's location on the outer edge of the Atlantic hurricane belt makes it a favorite among sun-seeking vacationers year-round.

5. Montego Bay, Jamaica

17/21
Montego Bay, Jamaica is the big riser this year, climbing three spots from eighth in 2019 to fifth in 2020. Adults seeking a private paradise in relaxing and picturesque Montego Bay can't go wrong at Excellence Oyster Bay or Breathless Montego Bay Resort & Spa.

4. Nassau, Bahamas

18/21
A beloved vacation destination for Americans on the East Coast and a popular cruise stop, Nassau dropped one spot to fourth in 2020 but is still firmly in the top five sitting nearly an entire percentage point higher than the aforementioned Montego Bay.

3. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico

19/21
Mexico is set to experience an influx of visitors this spring with the United States' North American neighbor sweeping the top three international destinations for American spring breakers in 2020. Puerto Vallarta is climbed up one spot from last year, claiming 6.3 percent of flight itineraries.

2. San Jose del Cabo, Mexico

20/21
San Jose del Cabo is a comfortable number two on this year's list accounting for nearly one in 10 of the international bookings that Allianz analyzed for 2020. Whether you're passionate about history, nature, relaxing or partying, this iconic resort town on Mexico's Baja California peninsula is not to be missed.

1. Cancun, Mexico

21/21
Like Orlando, Cancun remains Americans' favorite spring break destination for the fourth consecutive year, dominating with 13.4 percent of the flight itineraries that Allianz analyzed. The Mexican Caribbean's accessibility, a wealth of all-inclusive hotels and resorts geared toward both families and couples and a plethora of unique attractions gives it an undeniable edge.
