Discover Lake Atitlan, Guatemala's True Gem

Explore Lake Atitlan's Natural Beauty

1/10
Guatemala's Lake Atitlan spans a large area of 131 square kilometers and is surrounded by small villages, each with their own character, traditions and attractions. A two-and-a-half hour bus ride from Antigua gets you to Panajachel, a major town on the lake. From there, the water is easily crossed by the local boats that are fast, cheap and easy to navigate.

Hike the Nose

2/10
No trip to Lake Atitlan is complete without a sunrise hike up to the top of 'the Nose' in San Juan La Laguna. A rather strenuous two-hour hike straight up, it's worth it for the spectacular views. The lights of San Juan and San Pedro can be seen below, while off in the distance, Volcan de Fuego erupts sporadically.

Hike the Cross

3/10
A less strenuous hike than the Nose, the Cross is a short 20-minute hike up from San Juan La Laguna. Watch the world come to life in the morning while taking in the incredible view of the town below and Lake Atitlan itself.

Reserva Natural Atitlan

4/10
Reserva Natural Atitlan, found just outside Panajachel, is the perfect place to while away an afternoon. The easy hiking trails cross suspension bridges through the jungle while monkeys swing from the trees and agoutis scramble through the underbrush. If you still need more, there's an amazing butterfly sanctuary and nursery on site as well.

Explore Panajachel

5/10
Panajachel is likely your first introduction to Lake Atitlan. While the town is a lively place filled with markets, tourists and ex-pats, it is without a doubt the gateway to the lake itself. Stroll down to the docks and you'll be able to grab a cheap boat to just about anywhere on the lake for a reasonable price.

Stay at San Pedro La Laguna

6/10
San Pedro La Laguna is a place where travelers tend to congregate. Reasonably priced hotels and food, along with a lively nightlife, provide all the attractions needed for a great stay. With the boat docks right downtown, it's an easy place to get to and is the perfect base camp for exploring the rest of the lake.

Get to Know the Locals

7/10
The true attraction, the people of the region, are welcoming and friendly. With a tiny bit of Spanish, you can make fast friends who will quickly introduce you to their daily lives. The local artisans love sharing their traditional crafts and explaining their colorful outfits.

Relax at San Marcos La Laguna

8/10
San Marcos La Laguna is known as the spiritual center of the lake (for foreigners at least). Yoga retreats, holistic therapies, reiki, and massages are all available in town, at any level of commitment you are looking for. For a simple afternoon, check out the Mirador San Marcos, where you can swim in the lake and jump off the diving platform. It's a great place to meet and hang out with local and foreigners alike.

Stroll Through San Juan La Laguna

9/10
Throughout San Juan La Laguna are murals depicting aspects of local life and legend. The tranquil town is full of cooperatives that do everything from fishing and coffee growing to weaving and painting. Strolling around this lovely town, you'll find the people welcoming, kind and ready to share their traditions with you.

Watch the Sunset From the Dock

10/10
No visit to Lake Atitlan is complete without finding your own secluded dock to watch the sunset from. As local fishermen finish for the day and bring in their catch, the serene lake takes on a beauty that is difficult to beat.
