Jamaica Travel: What You Need To Know Before Visiting This Summer

Much like the rest of the Caribbean, Jamaica is open to summer travelers who can visit with relative ease more than two years into the COVID-19 pandemic. The island country and its renowned tourist-friendly destinations such as Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios remain as alluring as they've always been and local officials have taken steps to ensure that they're safer for visitors in 2022. The return of more nonstop flights from the U.S. to Jamaica and the increased prevalence of stellar hotel and resort deals are giving travelers additional incentives to book their next Caribbean vacation today. Combine these factors with loosening entry restrictions and it's clear that Jamaica is a top-tier travel destination. But before you visit, there are some things you should know.

The U.S. State Department is currently advising Americans to reconsider travel to Jamaica due to crime. Officials list specific areas of the country that travelers should avoid due to the threat of crime, including areas of Montego Bay such as Canterbury, Flankers, Glendevon, Mount Salem, Norwood, Paradise Heights and Rose Heights. Meanwhile, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that visitors are up to date with their COVID-19 vaccines before traveling to Jamaica.

Fortunately, Jamaica lifted pre-travel COVID-19 testing requirements and mask mandates in April, making it easier to visit this summer. However, travelers will still need to fill out the Immigration/Customs C5 form either online at enterjamaica.com or via a paper card issued by their airline.

Jamaica was among the first countries to be recognized by the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and its global safety and hygiene stamp that spotlights the destinations prioritizing traveler safety and hygiene in the time of COVID-19. "Everybody is trained. It's a consistent approach. You find that at the airport, on the buses you are following the protocols of mask-wearing and sanitization; you get into the hotels, it is the same thing," Jamaica Tourist Board Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Resilient Corridors Committee, John Byles, told TravelPulse last year. "When you are actually doing it, you will find it's quite seamless. It's not in any way disruptive in the approach or to your vacation."
