Oakland's Most Famous Street Art

Oakland Arts Month

1/10
Long an incubator for the artistic spirit, the City of Oakland is celebrating its creative spirit during the first-ever Oakland Arts Month this May. Among the scheduled activities will be the inaugural Oakland Mural Festival, from May 12-19, when at least seven murals will be simultaneously painted in Jack London Square. Before the event unfolds, however, visitors can view many of the city's other famed street murals

Rise and Grind (The Illuminaries)

2/10
Located at 19th & Webster Streets, this 100-foot by 100-foot artwork became the largest mural in Oakland when it was unveiled last year. As a part of the Oakland A's #RootedInOakland campaign, the mural features A's mascot, Stomper. Members of the public were invited to contribute to the art piece.

Beacon Frequency Reader (Joshua Mays)

3/10
The fourth in a series by artist Joshua May's BEACON mural series, this mural, located at 1700 Broadway, is currently among the city's largest murals. Artist Mays says he hopes the artwork will inspire visitors and locals to "follow the path laid forth and explore the diverse collection of colors, textures and sights."

Untitled (Luke Dragon, Dragon School)

4/10
Located on the side of the Lincoln Square Recreation Center in Chinatown, this was the first mural in a series known as the 99 Dragons Project, which inspired community businesses to get involved. Now, many small businesses sport their own signature dragon artwork on their storefronts.

Monkey King (Dragon School)

5/10
A favorite character in Chinese folklore, the Monkey King stars in this stunning mural at the corner of 7th & Harrison streets in Chinatown. The mural is said to pay homage to the traditional stories that bring together Chinese communities across the world.

Untitled (Dragon School & 3AYEM)

6/10
Part happy cat, part gorilla this mural at 8th & Webster Street is a collaborative effort between Oakland's Dragon School and legendary Bay Area street artist 3AYEM.

Laurel Space Bears (Roger Peet & Fernando Santos)

7/10
Located in Oakland's Laurel District, on MacArthur Blvd., this series of murals depicts the California grizzly bear with galaxy motifs in the silhouette. Designed in collaboration with the Center for Biological Diversity, the artwork is part of a national campaign to bring animals back to their native habitats.

Cosmic Human Evolution (Ernest Doty & Ryan Montoya)

8/10
Facing an on-ramp to the 880 freeway, this artwork was created by Ernest Doty and Ryan Montoya and depicts a surreal world where humans and nature are represented in mythical forms.

Untitled (Vogue)

9/10
Famed street artist Vogue created this hyper-realistic piece in West Oakland. The mural includes a skull with a gold crown, both trademarks of Vogue's work. Vogue, who grew up in Oakland, also has artwork on display in the new hip-hop exhibit, RESPECT at the Oakland Museum of Contemporary Art (OCMA.)

Visit Oakland Selfie Wall (The Illuminaries)

10/10
Visitors heading to the Oakland Marriott Convention Center can pose in front of the city's Selfie Wall, which was commissioned by Visit Oakland. The mural weaves iconic Oakland attractions in a large thought bubble.
