After Three-Year Hiatus, Lufthansa Resumes A380 Service to New York JFK

German carrier Lufthansa has resumed operations of its A380 to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport.

After three years of absence from the route for the superjumbo, which had been placed in long-term storage, it returned to service on the busy July 4 holiday weekend flying from Munich to New York. In June, the carrier also resumed flights with the plane to Boston.

The larger capacity Lufthansa plane seats up to 509 travelers and includes four classes of seats ranging from first class to business class, premium economy, and economy.  That includes eight seats in First Class, 78 seats in Business Class and 52 seats in Premium Economy.

The return of the plane provides an 80 percent capacity boost compared to Lufthansa’s Airbus 340s, which had been flying the same route.

The airline plans to fly the route between New York and Munich daily until the end of October.

The flights will include a departure from Munich each day at 12:10 that arrives in New York at 3 p.m. the JFK to Munich schedule will depart at 5:30 p.m. daily and arrive in Munich at 7:35 a.m. the next day.

The airline also announced back in April that it would bring the Airbus 380 to Los Angeles starting this fall. Beginning on October 5, Lufthansa will offer daily flights to Los Angeles on the plane.

In addition, shortly before the start of the winter flight schedule on October 28, there will be a special premiere: For the first time, a Lufthansa Airbus A380 will take off from Munich to the Thai capital Bangkok, increasing the seat capacity by almost 75 percent compared to the A350 that currently serves the route.
