Multiple Lufthansa employees were injured when a Boeing plane's nose gear collapsed while the aircraft was parked at Frankfurt Airport on Thursday.
According to the Associated Press, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner was at the gate ahead of passenger boarding when its front wheels retracted and the nose fell several yards, forcing crew members on the ground to back away.
Lufthansa confirmed that "several employees were injured and are currently receiving medical attention," while Boeing said it is "aware of the incident" and "supporting our customer."
The flight bound for Los Angeles was ultimately canceled due to the damaged aircraft.
Authorities are currently investigating the incident involving an aircraft that was delivered to Lufthansa as recently as January, according to Flightradar24.
Former U.S. federal aviation crash investigator Jeff Guzzetti told the AP that it's "very unusual" for a nose landing gear to collapse while an aircraft is at a standstill.
However, this week's incident comes just five years after a 787's nose gear retracted during maintenance testing at London’s Heathrow Airport. That error was attributed to a locking pin intended to prevent retraction that had been inserted into the wrong position.
