Travelers looking to upgrade their next flight experience by booking a first-class ticket without breaking the bank may want to consider American Airlines.

According to a new study by Upgraded Points, American boasts the lowest difference between a one-way economy and first-class ticket at $235.85 and the lowest average one-way first-class ticket at $370.43.

The travel experts at Upgraded Points analyzed first-class ticket pricing data for four major U.S. airlines that offer first-class service—American, Alaska Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines—as well as 12 of the busiest domestic flight routes.

Research shows that Delta ($419.62) leads the way with the highest premiums, charging $284.55 more for a one-way, first-class ticket compared to economy. While Alaska boasts a similarly high first-class ticket price difference at $281.25, it's worth noting that the carrier offers passengers unique amenities such as food for flights as short as 550 miles.

Still, at $478.99, Alaska's average first-class ticket is easily the most expensive among the airlines analyzed.

Meanwhile, United sees a price difference of $250.23 on average and an overall one-way first-class ticket cost of $372.74.

In terms of flight routes, flying first-class between New York (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX) will result in the biggest price difference, with a one-way economy ticket coming in at $188.29 on average, compared to $846 for first class. That results in a difference of $657.71.

Although a much shorter distance, flying first class from L.A. to San Francisco is the most wallet-friendly option with an average price difference of just $92.71 between first-class and economy on a one-way ticket.

"While some may view flying first-class as a financial stretch, the undeniable benefits of extra legroom, preflight service and complimentary beverages make it a tempting choice," Upgraded Points founder Alex Miller said in a statement. "With an average premium of just $262.97 per one-way flight, this luxury may be more affordable than travelers think."

"According to our data, American Airlines is the most cost-effective choice for travelers looking to upgrade their flight experience," Miller added. "In addition to typical first-class benefits, American Airlines travelers may get to experience a refreshed Admirals Club lounge, as the airline started upgrading their lounges to feel more modern and homey in select airports in 2022."
