The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in France issued a new security alert warning travelers of potential disruptions due to nationwide strikes and protests taking place across the European country through the weekend.
"Protests, demonstrations, and rallies continue across France. A nationwide multi-sector strike is planned for Thursday, November 5, affecting teachers, healthcare workers, government employees, and public transport across France. The four largest railway unions have called for a joint national strike. Numerous other groups have also called for protests on November 5 and through the weekend," the November 4 alert states.
"Recent routes for demonstrations were approved for outside of city centers, but protests can occur outside planned routes. Recent demonstrations were violent and involved property destruction and looting. Police have responded with less-than-lethal crowd control methods," officials added.
"Curfews in parts of France, including some neighborhoods in Paris and the vicinity, could continue. Curfew decisions are made locally, can be implemented with short notice, and restrict gatherings and free movement to some public landmarks."
In addition to rail and metro service disruptions this weekend, the embassy warns that "air travel may be disrupted by the multi-sector strike." Therefore, travelers are asked to check their flight status with their airline before arriving at the airport.
France currently remains at a Level 2 on the U.S. State Department's four-tier travel advisory scale, with visitors encouraged to exercise increased caution due to terrorism and unrest.
The latest security alert comes as a slew of bomb threats forced emergency landings across Europe this week.
