It’s
a celebration for Breeze Airways.
The low-cost carrier will open its ninth operating base at Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) when it does business in Fort Myers, Florida, later this year.
In addition, Breeze, which began operations
in 2022, has recorded
its first profitable month.
The airline will park three jets overnight at RSW and plans to use the facility as a base for pilots and flight attendants. Southwest Florida International fits the company’s mantra of operating in not-so-major airports.
Breeze serves 19 destinations from Fort Myers and plans to add five more. This will be the carrier's third base in the state of Florida. Breeze is making the state a priority at a time when other airlines are departing service in Florida.
In fact, fellow startup
airline Avelo will drop its capacity to Florida by more than 40 percent this
summer. By contrast, Breeze is increasing its
capacity to the Sunshine State by 49 percent.
The announcement by the airline comes at a
fortuitous time, as Breeze said it made a profit in the month of March, its first
profitable month in its short existence.
"Starting an airline is not for the
faint of heart, but we have remained true to our purpose: to give millions of
travelers in underserved markets access to efficient and affordable air
travel," Breeze president Tom Doxey said in a statement.
Breeze now serves 56 cities and 170 routes.
