A group
of climate activists protested at Munich airport in Germany by
gluing themselves to a runway and disrupting operations.
The
protesters were from a group that is active in Germany known as Last Generation. The airport in Munich handles
almost 37 million annual passengers and its primary tenant is German national
carrier Lufthansa and its subsidiaries.
The incident took place on Saturday morning, May 18, 2024, resulting in numerous cancelations and delays. The airport was briefly closed.
"Problem is the government, not our holiday,"
read one of the signs held by the protesters, referring to a national holiday
held in Germany over the weekend.
Eight people were arrested. About 60 flights were
impacted, including 11 that were diverted to other airports. Germany's interior
minister, Nancy Faeser, said "Such criminal actions endanger air traffic
and harm climate protection because they only cause contempt and anger."
This is
not the first time something like this has happened and it ended
up in a court of law.
