An Aeromexico plane and a Delta plane just missed colliding at the Mexico City Airport in the early morning on Monday, July 21.
According to AIRLIVE, Aeromexico Connect Flight AM1631 was trying to land at MEX from Aguascalientes when Delta Air Lines Flight DL590 tried to take off from the safe runway, heading for Atlanta.
Both aircraft, according to reports, were going at fast speeds, the Delta flight accelerating for takeoff, while the Aeromexico flight was trying to land. While there is no report on how close the two planes became, the Delta flight did abort its takeoff, saving both planes from a potential collision.
The Delta flight departed two hours late following the event, while the Aeromexico flight was able to land as usual.
“Flight 590 from Mexico City was involved in a runway incursion incident during departure,” a Delta spokesperson said. “The flight proceeded safely and without delay.”
Mexican aviation authorities are now investigating the incident.
Just a few days before, on July 18, a Delta pilot had to make an “aggressive” maneuver to save his plane from a collision with a B-52 bomber that was conducting a flyover at a state fair in North Dakota and had failed to announce its location to air traffic control.
