Groupon officials announced the launch of a new loyalty program that will allow users to earn airline miles and hotel points with each purchase.
Starting Wednesday, people will be able to earn airline miles and hotel points from top frequent traveler programs just for buying a Groupon local, travel or shopping deal. Eligible travel rewards programs include American Airlines AAdvantage, Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan, Choice Privileges, IHG Rewards Club, JetBlue's TrueBlue Program and La Quinta Returns.
To take advantage of the new loyalty program, Groupon users must visit the company's loyalty page and click on the program in which they want to earn miles or points. People must then create or log in to a Groupon account and enter their loyalty program membership number and confirm they agree to the terms and conditions.
Finally, Groupon users will receive a unique promo code they can enter with every purchase to receive credit for miles or points.
"We're excited to have more frequent interactions with our customers by providing them with even greater value when they shop through Groupon," Groupon senior vice president Vinayak Hegde said in a statement. "Whether it's finding a new local experience to try, booking a trip with the family or getting an early start on your holiday shopping, we're offering incredible savings and airline miles or hotel points from your favorite loyalty programs. A win-win."
The earnings system for airline miles includes earning 1,000 miles when new customers make a local purchase of $30 or more, five miles for every dollar spent locally, four miles for every dollar spent on getaways and three miles for every dollar spent on goods.
As for the earnings system for hotel points, new users can earn 2,000 points for local purchases of $30 or more, 10 points for every dollar spent locally, eight points for every dollar spent on getaways and six points for every dollar spent on goods.
Company officials said Groupon plans to add more brands to the loyalty program in the coming months and expand the service for international customers.
