Passengers awaiting their flight in Portland International Airport's south atrium won't have to check their watch or smartphone for the time anymore. Instead, they can look to the 24-foot tall cuckoo clock that recently arrived at PDX airport.
According to USA Today's Harriet Baskas, the giant structure is the tallest freestanding cuckoo clock in the United States.
Stretching more than nine feet wide and weighing nearly 7,000 pounds, the clock was created in an effort to promote Travel Portland's tourism campaign.
The clock has already visisted Seattle and Vancouver, and will remain on display at PDX through March 2015.
Sculptor and mechanical designer Nicolas Gros created the clock, which features fully functioning wooden gears and carved adornments by Oregon-based wood sculptor Chester Armstrong.
Sasquatch, Mount Hood, beer and wine, salmon, roses and timber are just a few of the Portland icons and activities represented by Armstrong's chainshaw-carved figures on the clock.
So far, the clock has been a hit with passengers who have stopped by not only to admire the brilliant craftsmanship, but to take selfies as well (h/t Ben Kittelson):
At the top of the hour, a chicken pops out of the clock and leads a parade of figures through the two small doors located below the timepiece.
