Travelport announced this morning that its travel agencies in the United States can now begin to search, sell and book air travel to and from Cuba.
"U.S. travelers now have new opportunities for air travel to Cuba," Scott Hyden, Travelport's group vice president and general manager, Americas, said in a statement. "Travelport's technology provides travelers with choices, and we're excited to be leading the way in making air travel to Cuba more accessible to travel agencies and U.S. citizens through Travelport's travel commerce platform."
The Obama administration announced in January that it would ease travel restrictions to Cuba for U.S. citizens, but only under 12 specific categories.
In order to search and book air travel to Cuba, Travelport travel agencies in the United States - including American Samoa, Guam, North Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands - will be required to sign a contract amendment with Travelport before gaining access to Cuba travel air content.
Once a travel agency signs the contract amendment, Travelport will activate the agency to search and sell air travel to and from Cuba for travel authorized by the United States government. Access to flights to and from Cuba will be made live and bookable initially to users of Apollo and Worldspan, and will be extended to Galileo-connected agents in the coming months.
Travelport said it will continue to evaluate its options regarding other content (including hotel, car, cruise or tour content), consistent with U.S. law.
