Republicans in the United States House of Representatives
have introduced a new bill that calls for Washington D.C.’s main airport to be
renamed after former President Donald Trump.
According to ABCNews.com,
the legislation was referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure
Committee for further consideration and calls for Washington Dulles
International Airport to be renamed Donald J. Trump International Airport.
Pennsylvania Republican Guy Reschenthaler introduced the
legislation last week, which was sponsored by other representatives, including Chuck
Fleischmann, R-Tenn., Paul Gosar, R-Ariz, Troy Nehls, R-Texas, Andy Ogles,
R-Tenn., Barry Moore, R-Ala. and Mike Waltz, R-Fla.
“Freedom. Prosperity. Strength. That's what America stood
for under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, the best president of my
lifetime,” Rep. Reschenthaler said. “And that's why I'm introducing legislation
to rename Dulles as the Donald J. Trump International Airport.”
The bill must pass the Republican-controlled House but will
likely die on the floor of the Democratic-controlled Senate. Several Democratic
representatives have opposed the legislation, including Abigail Spanberger, who
called it “ridiculous but sadly real.”
Officials from the Metropolitan Washington Airports
Authority, which operates Washington Dulles Airport, did not comment on the
bill.
