Southwest Airlines has debuted a first-of-its-kind plugin in ChatGPT in an effort to drive AI-powered flight bookings.
The low-cost carrier has launched a phased AI-powered booking approach with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) designed to allow travelers to discover and shop for flights directly in ChatGPT.
According to the Dallas-based airline, "the Southwest plugin makes certain Southwest travel information available within ChatGPT, but Southwest does not operate or control the ChatGPT platform or its responses."
"ChatGPT responses are generated by artificial intelligence and may contain errors or omissions. Southwest is not responsible for the accuracy or completeness of information provided by ChatGPT," the airline's website states.
While ChatGPT users can plan their trips, search Southwest flights and compare dates, times and fares, booking will still take place on Southwest.com rather than within ChatGPT.
"Customers are evolving how they plan their travel, and Southwest is helping to shape what comes next. It is a meaningful example of how we test and learn with AI innovation to continue the Customer-first approach that defines our brand," Southwest's Digital and Marketing Officer Sabrina Callahan said in a statement.
"We're putting the right technology in place to support what our Customers need today with flexibility to build what they'll need tomorrow," added Lauren Woods, Executive Vice President & Chief Information Officer at Southwest Airlines. "By creating a secure, scalable foundation for AI, we can add new capabilities more quickly and thoughtfully, making it easier to serve Customers across their journey."
