The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that the computer system outage that impacted John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City was remedied on Sunday night.

According to CBSNews.com, the system outage at JFK Airport started at around noon Eastern Time and lasted for 1.5 hours, leaving several flights delayed on the runway and long lines at one of the property’s main terminals.

Travelers moving through New York’s JFK Airport on Sunday ran into major headaches after a system outage brought operations in Terminal 4 to a standstill.

The trouble appears to have started late Sunday morning, when travelers arriving to check in found that computer systems across the terminal weren’t working.

According to The Mirror US, one passenger posted on X, “We got here at 11:20 a.m. and the lines have not moved at all. We got notified of the issue at the moment we got to the terminal to check our bags. All of the airlines at terminal four are experiencing the same issue.”

Etihad Airways, which operates out of the affected terminal, confirmed the problem on its @EtihadHelp account on X, writing, “There is a system outage in JFK T4 that is affecting the entire terminal, the airport teams are working on this and will assist you as soon as possible.”

Videos circulating on social media show packed terminal spaces filled with stranded passengers who couldn’t move forward with the usual check-in or processing procedures, Airlive reported.

It seems that all of Terminal 4’s airlines were impacted, but JFK officials have not released details on what caused the outage as of Sunday afternoon. Airport staff on site were reportedly trying to manage crowds and manually assist passengers while the issue was being resolved.

The timing couldn’t be worse: the outage hit during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, with millions of Americans expected to fly ahead of Thanksgiving.

At the time of publication, no official timeline has been released for when normal operations will be fully restored, but airport teams are reportedly working to get systems back online as quickly as possible.
