A collision between two planes on the ground at South Carolina’s Charleston International Airport on Friday night led to two people being evaluated for injuries and delayed a Breeze Airways flight.

The incident happened shortly after 9:30 p.m. when Breeze Airways Flight MX509, traveling from Las Vegas to Norfolk, Virginia, was diverted to Charleston due to thunderstorms near Norfolk. The Airbus A220-300 touched down safely and was parked on the tarmac, waiting for refueling before continuing its journey.

Then, around 9:50 p.m., the tail of the Breeze Airways aircraft was struck by an All Nippon Airways (ANA) Boeing 787-10 as it was taxiing nearby. ANA told People that the left wingtip of their plane made contact with “equipment positioned near a Breeze Airways aircraft.” At the time, only the ANA crew of five was aboard its plane and they all disembarked without injury.

Breeze Airways said all passengers on the Airbus were deplaned after the collision, with two individuals evaluated for minor injuries at the scene. Those passengers were then transported by bus to the terminal. The airline arranged a replacement plane to continue the flight to Norfolk, which eventually departed around 1:20 a.m. Saturday and arrived at its destination at 2:50 a.m.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will launch a probe into the cause of the collision, with both Breeze Airways and ANA having expressed cooperation with authorities and investigators.
