An unruly passenger caused a chaotic scene on an American Airlines flight that was landing in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The pilot of flight AA3046 reported to air traffic control that a passenger bit another flier and was “trying to fight everybody,” according to a CBS News report.
The airline pilot also requested law enforcement and a medical crew to meet the plane upon arrival in Philadelphia “just as a precaution,” according to the air traffic control audio recording.
The passenger in question was experiencing a medical emergency, American Airlines told CBS News in a statement, and a medical professional assisted the flier before the plane landed. Once on the ground, an airport medical team took over care for the passenger.
Out of control fliers have long been a problem on flights in the United States and elsewhere. Typically, the bad behavior spikes during the busy summer travel months.
In the UK, transportation officials have taken a major step toward getting drunken and unruly passengers under control. Under a new proposal from the UK Department for Transport, fliers could be banned from all airlines in the country if they exhibit abusive behavior, like yelling at flight attendants or becoming violent.
Although the U.S. has no such legislation under consideration, the FAA has a zero-tolerance policy for unruly passengers and routinely fines them up to $43,000+ for disruptive behavior.
