With airports in Cozumel and Cancun reporting an increase in passenger traffic, Mexico's airline industry is getting stronger.
According to The Riviera Maya Times, Cozumel International Airport administrator Jorge Carlos Campos Romero revealed the facility flew 541,598 passengers to their destinations last year, as compared to 438,832 in 2010.
The number of flights at the Cozumel airport also went up, with 8,602 total in 2017 as compared to the 3,452 flights during 2010. The numbers indicate the popular tourist destination is still enticing travelers to visit.
As for Cancun International Airport, the facility grew by 10.2 percent last year as compared to the previous time period. The total number of registered passengers climbed from 21,415,795 in 2016 to 23,601,509 in 2017, according to Reportur.com.
In December alone, the Cancun airport registered a 7.2 percent increase in passenger volume when compared to the same month the previous year.
While tourism officials in Mexico are happy at the increase in passenger traffic via the airlines, the hotel industry is growing at a significantly lower rate. One of the reasons behind the decrease in hotel stays is the rise of short-term rental apps like Airbnb.
