The United States has reportedly agreed to support the Mexico Maya Train project after recent talks with President Andras Manuel Lopez Obrador.
According to the Riviera Maya News, Lopez Obrador met with U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross Friday in Merida last week and the Mexican president followed it up with a speech announcing America's support of the transportation project.
"Yesterday we had a meeting in Merida, Yucatan with the Secretary of Commerce of the United States government and he gave me a message from President Trump that they are willing to invest and help to build the Maya Train and other infrastructure work in the southeast," Lopez Obrador said at the press conference.
"I congratulate the new presidential administration in Mexico for its strong emphasis on improving the economic development of this region in particular," Ross said. "We also thank them for assisting us as we confront the crisis at our southern border."
Ross went on to explain that Mexico is the second-largest export market and third-biggest trading partner of the U.S., with more than $678 billion in goods and services changing hands last year.
