An incident on Tuesday off the Greek island of Corfu made waves when a passenger fell overboard during a high wind event.
Norwegian Cruise Line has confirmed the incident happened to one of its ships; a passenger fell off the gangway and into the water after high winds caused the ship to break free of its moorings. The passenger was successfully rescued shortly thereafter and transported by an ambulance to a local hospital.
Norwegian said the vessel was one of its ships and said the Italian captain merely gave a statement to local authorities as part of standard protocol. Multiple outlets initially reported that the captain was arrested after the incident, but Norwegian disputed that.
“He fully cooperated with the investigation, was released without restriction following his statement and immediately resumed his duties aboard the vessel to prepare for the ship’s departure,” the cruise line told USAToday. “The safety of our guests and crew remains our top priority, and the ship continued its voyage as planned with only minor adjustments to call times.”
It was also reported that the female passenger, 56, was a citizen of New Zealand, and suffered only minor injuries to her body and face.
