Cannes is banning large cruise ships starting next year.
The French city will no longer permit vessels transporting more than 1,000 guests to enter its harbor starting January 1, reports the Associated Press.
A maximum of 6,000 passengers will be allowed to disembark in the city per day, according to new limits approved by city council on Friday.
Passengers on large ships may still be able to visit Cannes, they’ll just need to be transferred to smaller boats first.
“Cannes has become a major cruise ship destination, with real economic benefits," said Mayor David Lisnard in a statement. "It’s not about banning cruise ships, but about regulating, organizing, setting guidelines for their navigation.”
Earlier this year, the nearby city of Nice voted to ban cruise ships carrying more than 900 passengers. Amsterdam, Venice, Greece and several other destinations have also taken steps to limit cruise tourism recently.
