Carnival Corporation & plc is installing solar panels atop two of its cruise terminals in Barcelona.
The 1,350 roof-mounted solar panels will be the first at the Port of Barcelona. Once the work is completed at Palacruceros (Terminal D) and Helix Cruise Center (Terminal E), the panels will be able to supply more than 100 percent of the energy needed to power daily operations.
They’re expected to produce 866,000-plus kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year.
An estimated 245,000 kWh of surplus power generated by the solar panels will be fed back into the grid. It’s enough to power 60 households for a year.
The Barcelona install began in July and is on track to be completed by the end of the year. Earlier this year, Carnival developed a new solar panel farm at its Amber Cove Cruise Center in the Dominican Republic.
Port of Barcelona, meanwhile, was the first port in the Mediterranean with the capability to supply cruise ships with liquefied natural gas.
“The shift to renewable energy is an integral part of our global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and minimize our environmental footprint at the beautiful destinations we visit,” says Karin Plettner Rutishauser, vice president of global ports and destinations strategy for Carnival Corporation.
“By partnering with Port of Barcelona, the solar panels at our terminals will significantly contribute to the production of clean energy, benefiting both the local community and our over one million cruise guests who enjoy this vibrant city each year," Rutishauser continued.
